i-imagination and Sketchwalk @ Joo Chiat

Spent 8 hours last night rendering my sketch digitally for OIC Singapore Anniversary.
Completed and submitted at 7am in the morning.
I turned my A2 pencil drawing (which I did for Drawing Essentials Module) into a digital painting. I always wonder how it would look with colours, and I was dying to use my wacom tablet at the same time.

I did a short course on digital painting at Eggstory Digital Arts School in March with some cash which i won from a Art Competition that I participated in while I was in ITE.
In my opinion that course was 'Money well spent'.
I was always interested in digital painting and received a Wacom tablet last year on my 21st Birthday from my dearest cousin Tiffany and her mum to encourage my passion and studies.

I am also inspired by famous wood painter Audrey Kawasaki. She hand painted her illustrations on wood!
So I decided to give my illustration a 'wooden background'
But instead of hand painting, I painted mine digitally with my wacom tablet.
The best part about doing things digitally is the fact that you can 'undo' your mistakes, whereas there is no undoing for traditional paintings. But I still prefer traditional art over digital.

Decided to name my work 'i-inspiration' because it depicts my ideas, interest and inspirations emerging/exploding from my head, from weird to quirky stuff.
Basically their spelling starts with an 'i' thus i-inspiration.

I did not get any sleep, after submitting my files to OIC, I prepared and left for Paya Lebar mrt station to meet the Urban Sketchers together with Noel and GuiTing for Sketchwalk at Joo Chiat

We walked down Joo Chiat Road while keeping our eyes peeled for interesting things/buildings to sketch.
It was a very sunny and hot this morning, I only did one sketch due to the fatigue from staying up all night and walking down Joo Chiat under the hot sun. I really wish I had the energy to do at least one more.

Card Collection & Sketches

I apologize for not updating. I have been really busy with school assignments.

Below is a collage of Business Cards which I collated for my 'Communicating Design Ideas' module.
I have been collecting Business Cards since 2008. It all started when I went to Hong Kong with ITE for an exchange trip. We visited Hong Kong's design school and even attended the Business of Design Week.

I was attracted to the unique Business Card illustrations and that was how it all started.

In this piece, I was inspired by my friend GuiTing's sculpture which she created for the final submission during our 3DArtFun module.

This Saturday there will be another Sketchwalk organised by Singapore's Urban Sketches, this time it we will be sketching Joo Chiat! I can hardly wait, this sketchwalk is a great chance for me to relax after sleepless nights and never ending school assignments.

ADM Graduation Show

Attended the opening of NTU's School of Art Design and Media graduation showcase today at The Old School along with my friends Noel and YuanRu.
We climbed the long flight of stairs behind Plaza Singapura just to get there.

The overall exhibition was great and I never fail to be inspired by other artist and designers.
I plan to go back again soon (if I have the time) to take a closer look at their works and flip through their portfolio. I didn't really had a good look at their portfolio today because I came from school and I was carrying a laptop around.

My lesson end at 6pm now, currently doing ComDI (Communicating Design Ideas) and History of Graphic Design. Alot of writings to do for both modules, which explains why I haven't been updating for almost a week. But on the bright side this is a chance for me to improve on my writing skills!

My First Sketchwalk

Went for my first ever sketchwalk with my friends Noel, GuiTing and YuanRu this afternoon at Tiong Bahru near The White Canvas Gallery! Mdm Tia my lecturer from TP was one of the artist leading the sketch walk.
It was a fun experience, I saw alot of people scattered everywhere along Tiong Bahru sketching and each and everyone of them has their own unique style.

Here are my sketches. 77 Guan Chuan St. Just outside White Canvas Gallery. I don't bring along a portable stool like some artist, and I most certainly do not want to sit on the hot concrete floor so I stood at my most preferable angle and sketch standing.
I stood there and sketch with Noel, while GuiTing and YuanRu went to different locations.
It was very hot since it's past 2pm in the afternoon and the weather was very humid even though there is no sun. Me and Noel decided to do the watercolouring inside white canvas gallery where it is air conditioned.
GuiTing and YuanRu joined us shortly later, and I decided to sketch them. I'm still practicing my human proportion and facial features. I always draw heads too big, thanks to Japanese manga drawing style influence.

After 4pm people started coming back to White Canvas Gallery to display their sketches on the table and view each other work of art and share their experiences.

End of third Block

Just finished 3DArtFun module. We had to do a 1metre high sculpture for the final submission and present it at 9am on Friday the 16.
I spent 3 days working on my sculpture for a 3 min long presentation.
Even stayed at in school till almost midnight on Thursday to finish it! Some friends were there too so I had company, and we had fun too while working.

The entire process from developmental sketches to execution and the end result was really fun, enjoyable and a great experience.

Here is a short summary of how I did it,

Developmental sketches. My Lecturer Justin want us to come up with 3 ideas and different sculptures which we want to create and he will advise us on materials and which is best.
Initially I wanted to do the Tiki Women carrying a tray of fruits on her head, but strangely Justin and my friends advised me to go with the totem in the middle.

Step 1.
I used Corrugated Boards for the foundation of my sculpture. One of the requirement for this project is to create a minimum 1metre high sculpture, I wanted it to be slightly higher and same height as me but I overdid and created it 2metre high instead.
I use masking tape and superglue to secure the foundation and with a marker I estimated where I wanted each features to be.

Step 2.
Crushed newspaper to create it's 3D features and secure them with masking tapes, loads and loads of masking tapes. I have to make sure that the whole feature is tape firmly to the foundation, at this point the surface of the sculpture is very uneven and had alot of holes.

End of Day 1.

Step 3.
To smooth out the surface to cover the holes and give the sculpture a more solid base, I paper mache the whole thing with newspaper mixed with diluted white glue. This entire process was very very tedious because if it's not paste on properly there would be holes and very uneven surfaces, I stayed till night in school and managed to complete it at 9pm with the help of some friends. I only did one layer of paper mache due to the tight time frame.
I left it to dry overnight.

End of day 2.

Step 4.
After the paper mache dried overnight, I painted 2 layers of white base with acrylic the next morning. The paper mache gave the surface of the sculpture abit of texture which I wanted because I'm trying to give my sculpture a carved out wood finish.

Step 5.
After the white base dried off, I hand painted the base colours and added details.
I took a long time to complete because I made it too huge and tall! I stayed back in school to complete this and left at midnight with my friends.
I wondered why I made it so high some times, but I don't regret it because I'm very happy with my work and the end results. Yes even if it means staying back in school till midnight, because I really enjoyed my friends company too.

Oh the Easter Island sculpture belonged to my friend Josh, he created a quirky Easter Island head wearing a baseball cap.

End of day 3.

The next day I did my presentation at 9am in the morning. And there you have it, 3 days worth of work and sleepless nights for a 3min presentation.
I went back home and slept like a pig for 3 hours after the presentation.

My classmate Noel is leaving us, he got accepted in NTU School of Art, Design and Media.
So a group of us decided to meet up and catch a movie together. Show time is at 1.10pm at Illuma but me, Noel and Yuan Ru decided to meet up slightly earlier at 10.30am for a little sketching session.
I think I may have found my sketching kakis :p

We sat outside Starbucks to sketch and I'm surprised that there were not many people during that hour!
And boy isn't it a good thing, okay maybe not good for YuanRu because she wanted to practice sketching people hahaha, I'm still working on my perspectives.

Drawing Essentials

I thought it would be nice to share what I did for Drawing Essentials last month.
For the final submission we were suppose to produce a A2 size drawing with either pencil, charcoal, ink etc. as long as its monochrome.

So I drew my wildest imagination.
Pardon me for the lousy quality photos, they were taken with my iphone.

I really enjoy doing pencil drawings but the shading part requires lots of time and patience.
The graphite will also dirty your hands, so I usually put a tissue paper over the spot where my palm rest.

I have a lot of sketches which I submitted to the lecturer and is still in the process of marking, I'll scan and upload them once I get them back. :)

Be Versatile

I have always encouraged myself not to be stuck to one drawing style and be more open to practice different styles of illustrations.

I'm very inspired by the female body and sexuality.
Here are some sketches which I did recently, I'm still trying to improve on facial features and hair!

My friends believe that I'm more of a cartoonist style artist.
I do agree because I have been doodling cartoons back during my childhood days where I watch alot of cartoons, and I still do!
I always feel that cartoons brings out the child in you, which brings out creativity and crazy ideas.

The Peacock was inspired by a friend who presented a wire model of a peacock during 3Dartfun class today.
Very sketchy doodle of some tiki or rather uncivilized people. Inspired by a game 'Godfinger' an iphone game which I recently installed.

The Opening of Tiong Bahru Sketches Exhibition

Attended the opening reception with some friends after school.
The place wasn't hard to find, its walkable from Tiong Bahru MRT Station. Alot of people turned up for the opening, here are some photos that I snap.

I also got the 4 artist autograph! I like Miel's the best, he actually illustrated himself hahaha.
